Curriculum Area:  Information Literacy, ELA, Reading
Grade Level: Grades 5 and 6 (can be adapted to primary by changing the table of authors)
Time needed:   4 visits to the library and allow time to read one book.
Brief description of the activity: Students in grades 5 and 6 will research one author from the list provided and become an investigative reporter.  Their tasks include researching biographical information, reading one of the author's books and completing a story map, creating a poster presentation and presenting an oral report.
Materials and Resources needed: access to the Internet, NOVEL Databases, a posterboard for each student, art materials, and an area for public speaking.
As a result of this lesson, the student will know and be able to:
1.   Research using the Internet and NOVEL databases, and improve library and information literacy skills
2.   Use technology to enhance their learning and improve computer and navigational skills, learn to identify legitimate websites
3.  Gain an  appreciation for literature 
Student product or performance to be used for evaluation: a poster board, oral report, two biographical sketch sheets, story map

                                    Bear Hunt

Time needed:  1 hour more or less   
Brief description of the activity: The students read and learn about 4 types of bears.  The students complete a comparison sheet.  They do an open ended writing about being a bear comparing and contrasting the types of bears. They draw a bear using geometric shapes. There are also related activities.
Materials and Resources needed: computer,printer, shapes, markers
As a result of this lesson, the student will know and be able to:
1. Identify 4 types of bears
2. Compare and contrast the 4 types of bears
3. Use math knowledge of geometric shapes to create a bear
Student product or performance to be used for evaluation: Comparison sheet, written assignment, drawing of bear, listening for comprehension
Criteria for evaluating: Listening, reading, written project done to teacher/district standards/state

                   Immigration to the United States

Brief description of the activity: A self directed exploration of the history of immigration and the current debate about immigration policy
Materials and Resources needed: Computer with WWW access and a printer. All other materials accessed through the program
As a result of this lesson, the student will know and be able to:
1. Discuss the various immigrant groups that have come to the US both historically and current with their reasons for immigrating, and the contributions they have made to the U.S
2. Discuss the personal experiences of immigrants
3. Present the various points of view one might encounter in the current debate about immigration policy

-Oral debate and guided questions
-Letter describing the experience of an immigrant or potential immigrant child
-Organizer on immigrant groups
-Newscaster interviews on points of view of different groups
-Poster presenting one societal response to immigrants

                                     Marine Life

Time needed: 3 -45 Minute classes   
Brief description of the activity: Students will navigate the webquest and then create a concrete poem and skit based on the knowledge gained from the webquest. Poems and artwork will be used to transform a portion of the classroom into an undersea environment. The skit will demonstrate the interaction/relationships of marine life.
Materials and Resources needed: Computer with an internet connection, variety of art supplies, ocean sounds or related music, paper , pens, pencils.
As a result of this lesson, the student will know and be able to:
1. A greater understanding of a variety of sea animals.
2. An idea of how sea animals relate to one another.
3. Express knowledge effectively through art , poetry and drama.

The students are guided through the web quest by 4 super hero type characters. The web quest will give he students the information needed to successfully complete a science fair project.

                 Kids in Space:

     A Webquest on the Solar System

Brief description of the activity: The children will use their knowledge of the Earth's natural resources to investigate the other eight planets, in terms of the natural resources, as well as the possibility of life on those planets.
Materials and Resources needed: Computer with an internet connection. We have all the necessary programs and materials for this webquest.
As a result of this lesson, the student will know and be able to:
1.Compare and constrast the natural resources of Earth versus the rest of the planets
2.use the internet and other resources to complete the research
3.present the researched information in oral and written form
