Curriculum Area: Social Studies

Grade Level:  2

Time Needed:  Two weeks

Brief  Description of Activity: The students will create web projects in which they research a particular famous African American.  They will then create web pages to present their information.

As a result of this lesson, the student will know and be able to:

  • Utilize FrontPage to create web pages using a template

  • Use research skills to answer essential questions

  • Research a particular topic, develop a project based upon it, and present it to their classmates.

Student product or performance to be used for evaluation: Students will create a project based on information learned through completing this unit, which will then be presented to their classmates.

Criteria for evaluating:

  • Students will be expected to work cooperatively and individually throughout this unit to display knowledge gained with 80% accuracy.

  • Class presentations will be completed within the timeframe and presented to the class on the allotted day.

Assessment tool for student products/ performance:

  • Students will be expected to follow classroom rules while working cooperatively, which will be assessed by the teacher throughout the unit.

  • Students will be expected to participate in classroom discussions and complete written assignments administered by the teacher.

  • Students will complete self-evaluations on their participation and presentation of the projects

  • Teacher will assess student presentations based upon project design, group or individual completion, and special needs of individual students.

Bronx Zoo Project

Curriculum Area: Social Studies
Grade Level Fifth Grade
Time needed:  2 hours to create projects then presentation time
Brief description of the activity: The students research different animals from different exhibits at the Bronx Zoo in preparation for their field trip.  They become experts and teach the rest of the class.
 

As a result of this lesson, the student will know and be able to:

                   Immigration to the United States

Brief description of the activity: A self directed exploration of the history of immigration and the current debate about immigration policy
Materials and Resources needed: Computer with WWW access and a printer. All other materials accessed through the program
As a result of this lesson, the student will know and be able to:
1. Discuss the various immigrant groups that have come to the US both historically and current with their reasons for immigrating, and the contributions they have made to the U.S
2. Discuss the personal experiences of immigrants
3. Present the various points of view one might encounter in the current debate about immigration policy
Student product or performance to be used for evaluation:

-Oral debate and guided questions
-Letter describing the experience of an immigrant or potential immigrant child
-Organizer on immigrant groups
-Newscaster interviews on points of view of different groups
-Poster presenting one societal response to immigrants
-Response forms for reading

                                     Marine Life

Grade Level: 3-4    
Time needed: 3 -45 Minute classes   
Brief description of the activity: Students will navigate the webquest and then create a concrete poem and skit based on the knowledge gained from the webquest. Poems and artwork will be used to transform a portion of the classroom into an undersea environment. The skit will demonstrate the interaction/relationships of marine life.
Materials and Resources needed: Computer with an internet connection, variety of art supplies, ocean sounds or related music, paper , pens, pencils.
As a result of this lesson, the student will know and be able to:
1. A greater understanding of a variety of sea animals.
2. An idea of how sea animals relate to one another.
3. Express knowledge effectively through art , poetry and drama.

Poems and skits created by the students.

Brief description of the activity: Students will take an exciting journey through the various parts of a Science Fair project. The students are guided through the web quest by 4 super hero type characters. The web quest will give he students the information needed to successfully complete a science fair project.

     A Webquest on the Solar System

Brief description of the activity: The children will use their knowledge of the Earth's natural resources to investigate the other eight planets, in terms of the natural resources, as well as the possibility of life on those planets.
Materials and Resources needed: Computer with an internet connection. We have all the necessary programs and materials for this webquest.
As a result of this lesson, the student will know and be able to:
1.Compare and constrast the natural resources of Earth versus the rest of the planets
2.use the internet and other resources to complete the research
3.present the researched information in oral and written form
